Student Food Drive to Plug Sustainable Activity

Phi Theta Kappa chapter weeklong event to support Eastern Illinois Food Bank, Kiva

Friday, November 14, 2014
Food Drive photoArea residents are invited to drop off nonperishable food and cash donations next week at Parkland College's Student Union, to feed local families and support sustainable farming efforts.

While they're there, residents may also glean a bit of information on eco-friendly practices the students are promoting--one each day, in fact.

Parkland's Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter, Alpha Psi Eta, is sponsoring the weeklong food drive, with donated items going to the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Canned meats, beans, fruit, and vegetables; complete canned and boxed meals; and peanut butter donations are especially appreciated.

All monetary donations will support Kiva, a nonprofit organization that facilitates loans to entrepreneurs in developing nations. Residents can also donate to the group's Kiva effort online.

From Nov. 17 to Nov. 21, students members from Phi Theta Kappa will staff a table in the first-floor lounge of the U wing, to collect the needed items while promoting the following practices:

Monday: Green Out Day, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday: Ecosystem Day, 3 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday: Skip a Meal Day, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Thursday: Trash Day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday: Farmers Day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
